Odd Couple

When the curtain was about to open on "The Odd Couple" on opening night, I was as nervous as I've ever been in my life. Not even walking out on stage is as nerve-wracking as sitting in the last row, knowing the show you've worked on is about to begin and you no longer have any control over it. Still, I'm not sure why I was so worried. As a first-time director, I'd followed the good advice of experienced directors Kellie Parkinson and Bill Kenner and had assembled the best cast I could find, we'd rehearsed until the lines came naturally (and we were still laughing at lines we'd heard dozens of times, right up through dress rehearsal).

As it turned out, I had nothing to fear. All three shows were fantastic, our audiences were friendly and appreciative, laughing (even at the breakaway cup that didn't break on Sunday) and roaring ("It took me three hours to figure out that F.U. meant Felix Ungar") and enjoying the work we'd done for ten weeks. I even enjoyed Saturday and Sunday's performances more as an audience member, relaxed and pleased with the finished product.

Thanks to my incredibly talented cast, our small but devoted technical crew, all of the ushers and house crew, and especially our audience, who continue to support live theater in the Blue Water area. We do it for ourselves, no doubt about it, but we do it for you as well. Would I do it again? Let me think about it... where do I sign up?

Tom Kephart, Director, "The Odd Couple"
